Pt 4 – My Fight with Dyslexia on Behalf of My DS
He enrolled in Cert 3, July of Yr.10, to study to become an Education Assistant. Once again, the education system let him down, multiple complaints to equal opportunities, inconsistent marking and a moving of goal posts meant DS ended up in counselling and on medication to assist him with his anxiety, but still he persevered. Still fighting a system because as he says, “he wants to teach kids like him, so they don’t have to fail as well.”
He passed his driving test 1st time and has applied to a university bridging course for Yr.12, with the intention of studying Psychology. My DS has choice and not because of the education system, nor because of his teachers, but because of me and him. He has persevered through situations that many adults would and have failed, we have fought the system and although we haven’t won, I refuse to let the system control my DS future. Afterall, I want him to move out, hold a full-time job and raise a family and to do that he needed to have the choice of career that he could do well in.!
Did I succeed? I don’t know, I truly believe he would never have achieved what he’s achieved, if I’d left it up to people who are undertrained and who lacked belief and expectation in his ability to be great. I hope that his next foray in education is significantly more understanding than his previous experiences and if they aren’t, I’ll be here to fight with him to win his battles and to force the world to let my DS show them he is amazing and what an asset he is.
